Coach Alvarez shared his thoughts on the previous season. See his comments below "Graduating 16 Seniors from our Varsity program, and returning 4 players (only 2 that played meaningful minutes), we knew there would be significant changes to our team. But change, if embraced, can also bring opportunities for many players. Starting with our first summer scrimmages, the players and coaching staff could tell we had the opportunity to be a good team. After our official scrimmage against Noblesville, we had to decide whether we would be a group of players with individual talent or a team that was willing to work hard to build relationships and chemistry to be a "team." As the season went along, we talked about taking the necessary steps of building the right culture to play for a higher purpose, and to embrace trust, teamwork, humility, perseverance and courage. The last step, courage, involved having the ability to learn from our losses to "meet the moment" and having the courage to be "great." We continued to play one of the more difficult schedules in 2A, and our season really took off after our loss to West Lafayette Harrison, who was ranked #1 in 3A at that time. We led 1-0 and 2-1 in the second half, but ended up losing 3-2. From a player, we knew we could have won that game if we would have had the courage to meet the moment. From there, we won 11 in a row and outscored our opponents 55 - 3 in route to a winning the state title against conference foe, Chatard, in a hard-fought and record-setting penalty kick affair (12 - 11). Highlights along the journey included a 2 - 1 victory against Westfield, where Cooper Prather '27 scored in the last 2-minutes on a bicycle kick; winning the conference against Roncalli on penalty kicks (4 - 3); beating Kentucky-Trinity Catholic 1-0, who was ranked #2 in the country at the time; and of course winning the Sectional, Regional amd Semi-State Championships. We had 5 players make All-Conference (Will Scheu '26, Christian Zermeno '26, Ryan McGrath '26, Gus Allen '27, and Cooper Prather); 2 players make 1st Team All-District (Will Scheu and Christian Zermeno); 1 player make 2nd Team All-District (Cooper Prather), and; 2 players make All-State Teams (Christian Zermeno - 2nd Team, and Will Scheu - 3rd Team). In fact, Will Scheu became the second player in Guerin Catholic Boys Soccer history to have 20+ goals and 20+ assists, followed closely by Christian Zermeno who scored 19 goals and had 23 assists. All-in-all, we had 13 different players score goals on the way to 82 for the year, and 14 different players with assists, while giving up only 18 (16 by Ryan McGrath ('26) who had 11 shutouts). Looking back, we had several players that made willing and individual sacrifices for the betterment of "team", which was necessary to become the team we could be. Winning the 2A State Championship was exciting and an honor, but we start back at 0-0 as we plan for next year. The bar has been set, and we have 12 returning Varsity players, 4 players that were called up for the tournament run, and a lot of talent coming up through the program that are ready to compete and defend our title. With a large freshman class this past season, and another potentially larger class of incoming freshmen, I and the coaches are excited for the future of the Guerin Catholic Boys Soccer program. Thank you for everyone inside and outside of the program who supported us along the way. We could not have had the season we did without you!!" Jim Alvarez Head Coach Guerin Catholic Boys Soccer (State Champions 2013, 2014, and 2025) Thanks Coach Alvarez and Congratulations on a great year!
