Each year, the Guerin Catholic Athletic Department awards a Coach of the Year to a deserving Guerin Catholic coach. This award is based on leadership with a program, the achievements of a team and a coach who lives out the mission of Guerin Catholic. At the Coaches Retreat last Thursday evening, two coaches were named Coach of the Year - Jim Alvarez (Boys Soccer) and Dave Schrage (Baseball). Jim Alvarez completed his 4th season as the Head Coach of Boys Soccer which culminated in an 18-4 record, a conference championship, a #1 ranking and the 2025 Class 2A State Championship. In the state championship game, the Golden Eagles edged out conference rival Bishop Chatard in historic fashion - 13 rounds of penalty kicks. The run by Alvarez and Co. resulted in the 3rd state title in program history (2013, 2014, 2025). Dave Schrage, after 35+ years of college coaching, finished his 2nd year at Guerin Catholic. In all the years prior, the Golden Eagles had not advanced past the sectional championship, but the last two years with Schrage at the helm says it all: 2 Sectional Titles, 2 Regional Titles, 1 Semi-State Title and the 2026 Class 3A State Championship. This past season, the team won the Circle City Conference Championship, the Catholic Classic and took down defending champion Andrean in the title game by a score of 9-3. The team finished 28-3-1 on the season resulting in the best two year run in school history. Congratulations to both Jim Alvarez and Dave Schrage!
