The Guerin Catholic Athletic department is pleased to announce the Guerin Catholic Male and Female Athlete of the Year - nominated and voted upon by Guerin Catholic’s Head Coaches. Gabby Deer '25 is a two-sport athlete, playing both soccer and lacrosse during her 4 years at Guerin Catholic. During her time in those two sports, she earned 7 varsity letters, earned All-State honors and the title of team captain in lacrosse. In the 2023 Girls Soccer State Championship, she scored the game winning goal to secure the program’s first title in school history. This season in lacrosse, she is the team’s leading goal scorer with an astounding 70 goals in 18 games. She is one of three student-athletes in Guerin Catholic history to have been a part of 3 state championships - 1 in soccer and 2 in lacrosse. Next year, she will be playing lacrosse at Siena College. Malcolm Houze '25 is also a two-sport athlete and can best be described in two phrases: Record Breaker and Buzzer Beater. A 4 year football and basketball player, this student athlete rewrote the record book on the football field as the starting quarterback this past year earning All-Conference and All-State honors. Amidst a number of program records that were broken, he also made local and national headlines, as in one game, he passed for 638 yards and 8 touchdowns. As if those numbers weren’t enough, there was one moment that may just top it. With 3.5 seconds to play in the 2024 Sectional Championship, this student-athlete was in the right place at the right time and scored the game winning buzzer beater to defeat top ranked Brebeuf in a double overtime thriller that will go down as one of the great moments in Guerin Catholic Athletics history! Next year, he will play football at DePauw University.
